Essential oils versus Anointing Oils: Are they the same?

Many of you know me for my book 'The Anointed Bride: Discover the ancient truth about Anointing and Anointing Oil', which was published in 2016. Because of my book, I have received numerous questions about Anointing Oils, but also about essential oils. It's interesting to see was that these questions came from all layers, from Church visitors to Church leadership. To me it is such a great joy to see how the knowledge of the Anointing and Anointing Oil is being restored, after so many centuries of absence. Even though that knowledge is still spreading around slowly. However, more and more often I see and hear people assume that essential oils are in fact the same as Anointing Oils. I hear how people are using essential oils to Anoint others and themselves. I've also been asked if I am using essential oils as well and if I would be interested in it. Since these questions are increasing, I've decided to answer all these questions in one article.

Throughout the last years I have heard so many people say that they believe that the use of Anointing Oil is prohibited, or at least limited to the Anointing of the sick. Some say this based on the things that God said about the Holy Anointing Oil. Others use the oil so freely, that they believe that every composition or recipe can be used for every purpose. It is always good and wise to know what the Word of God actually says about something.

Who Is Allowed To Use Anointing Oil?

I have heard this question so many times. Who is allowed to use Anointing Oil? I have always replied to this question with the answer that everyone is allowed to use it, and I still stand by this answer. In fact, I have found so much more proof about this, while studying this topic. The personal use of Anointing Oil was a common use throughout the whole Old Testament and throughout the whole New Testament. It was a common use among the people of Israel, and later also among the Christians of the first Churches.

The Image Of Anointing Oil

The Anointing and the use of Anointing Oil have a deep spiritual meaning. And with spiritual I mean Spiritual. It is not ‘an’ image, but ‘the’ image of empowerment by the Holy Spirit. It is a symbol of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in man. The anointed ones are also referred to as sons of oil, the ones with a shining countenance, glowing ones, bright ones and “God’s great ones”. The question that remains is, of course, what it should express?

Throughout my early years in the Church, the only thing I had seen, in regard to Anointing Oil, was how a Church leader would put a drop of oil on his finger and then applied it on someone’s forehead, in the form of a cross. That happened only when people were sick. The times that I visited other Churches, it wasn’t any different. Actually, in these days I still don’t see much different than that, although the awareness of the Anointing Oil is growing in the Churches. As we’ve seen in the previous chapter, everyone is allowed to use Anointing Oil for personal use. But how do we use it?
