In the years I’ve spent in the charismatic movement, I’ve found out that most of those churches are mainly aimed at breaking curses and deliverance of evil spirits. When things are going wrong or when we are facing hard and difficult times in our lives, that is the solution many offer. According to that theory a (wo)man is free when everything is going well and when we no longer face setbacks. When we do face setbacks, most of those churches are starting to search for curses or demons again.

Everyone has made mistakes. Everyone has sinned. There was and is no human being, except Jesus, who is without sin. John emphasized this in 1 John 1:8, when he said: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” That is heavy language, but it is what it is. I’d rather spend my life believing the Truth, than wasting it believing a lie.

There is only one thing strong enough to break the power of a lie, and that is the truth. But not just the truth, because the truth itself can be useless when you don’t understand it and don’t know how to use it. In that case it is just knowledge. It is like watching a fire burn from behind a window. You can see it, you can see the people who are getting warm from it, you just aren’t able to feel it yourself. You are on the outside looking in. That is what pure knowledge is. When you’re cold, it’s not enough to know that a fire can warm you. It’s not enough just to look at the fire. You need to come near it in order to be warmed.

Jesus Christ died for our freedom. Therefore many assume that this can be a life without struggles, without tribulations and without persecution, if we only know how to apply this freedom. But that couldn’t be further from the Truth. At the moment we accept Jesus Christ as our Messiah and Savior, a growth process starts. At that point we’re still very much our old ‘men’. And we all know that Jesus wants us to change according to His image and for His glory. The growth process starts, whether we’re aware or not. But what happens on that road? And why?
